The Director of Communications and Public Affairs of the Judiciary of Sierra Leone, Elkass Sannoh, has highlighted what he described as key achievements recorded under the leadership of the Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda, in less than two years since his appointment by President Julius Maada Bio in December 2024.

According to Sannoh, the Chief Justice has overseen several landmark reforms, including becoming the first to decentralise Court of Appeal sittings to the provinces, the commissioning of Sexual Offences Model Courts in Bo and Makeni, and leading Sierra Leone’s Judiciary as the first national to head and host the ECOWAS Judicial Council.

He made these remarks during an engagement with members of the Sierra Leone Court Reporters Association, where he emphasized the Judiciary’s appreciation for the role of court reporters in supporting the administration of justice.

“A weak and irresponsible press can damage public trust in the courts, while a professional and ethical press strengthens democracy and the rule of law,” Sannoh stated.

He urged journalists to ensure accuracy in their reporting, warning that inaccurate headlines could damage reputations, prejudice proceedings, or undermine public confidence in the justice system.

Sannoh also encouraged court reporters to report any observed irregularities within court premises before publication, allowing administrative mechanisms to address concerns appropriately. He reaffirmed the Chief Justice’s commitment to ongoing judicial reforms.

In response, the President of the Sierra Leone Court Reporters Association, Salifu Conteh, described Justice Komba Kamanda as “a supporting pillar of media growth and development.”
