Sierra Leone’s Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda, has officially assumed the Chairmanship of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Judicial Council.

The announcement was made in a press notice issued on July 4, 2025, by the judiciary of Sierra Leone.

This appointment follows the election of President Julius Maada Bio as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government during the 65th Ordinary Session held in Abuja, Nigeria. According to ECOWAS protocols, the chairmanship of the Judicial Council is conferred upon the Chief Justice of the member state whose president assumes the Authority’s leadership.

The ECOWAS Judicial Council comprises Chief Justices from all 15 member states and acts as the legal advisory body supporting the judicial arm of ECOWAS. In this role, Chief Justice Kamanda will oversee the Council’s deliberations, promote regional judicial cooperation, and lead initiatives to advance the rule of law and judicial independence across West Africa.

In response to his appointment, Chief Justice Kamanda expressed gratitude and reiterated his commitment to enhancing regional legal cooperation. He stated, “It is a great honor to serve as Chairman of the ECOWAS Judicial Council at such a critical time for our region. As guardians of justice, we must work collectively to uphold the rule of law, protect human rights, and ensure that justice transcends borders.”

The judiciary of Sierra Leone regards this appointment as not only a personal achievement for Chief Justice Kamanda but also a proud moment for the country’s justice system. It signifies increased regional recognition of Sierra Leone’s judicial reforms, the professionalism of its judiciary, and its contributions to regional stability and good governance.
