The Sierra Leone ambassador to Guinea, who was recalled from duty amid allegations of involvement in a cocaine trafficking incident, continues to spark questions as new information emerges.
A senior source very close to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Timothy Kabba revealed that the recalled ambassador is currently residing in his hometown of Kambia. When asked whether the ambassador had been questioned by government officials or the police, the source to the minister explained that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ role was only to ensure the safe return of the ambassador to Sierra Leone. According to him, the ministry considers its function complete once the ambassador has been brought home.
“The role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was to facilitate the ambassador’s return, which has been done. The ministry has no further function in the matter,” the source stated.
However, this clarification has done little to quell public concerns, as many Sierra Leoneans are questioning why the ambassador has not faced further scrutiny or investigation by the government or law enforcement agencies. The public has raised suspicions about whether the ambassador’s return was an attempt to shield him from the serious allegations he faces.
The incident began in January when Guinean authorities intercepted a utility vehicle belonging to the Sierra Leone embassy, which was reportedly carrying a large amount of cocaine. The driver of the vehicle and a second individual, whose identity disclosed to me, but the source could give his permission to publish the name on this article, were arrested by the Guinean authorities and are currently facing trial in Guinea.
Meanwhile, the ambassador, who was recalled to Sierra Leone following the incident, has been relatively quiet, with no official updates regarding the investigation into his potential involvement or knowledge of the crime.
With the ambassador now reportedly resting in his hometown, it seems as though the matter may be slipping out of the public’s attention, raising further concerns about the governments seriousness in finding a solution to this issue. The fact that the ambassador has not faced any questioning or public investigation suggests that he may have evaded the serious allegations of involvement in drug trafficking.
Members of the media, are calling for a thorough investigation into the ambassador’s role in the scandal and for full accountability to be pursued. The public is demanding answers regarding whether the ambassador was complicit in the trafficking scheme, or if he was merely an unwitting participant.
Critics argue that the government should have taken more decisive action to investigate the ambassador’s involvement in the alleged drug trafficking ring.
Follow the money and you will know who’s who in the drug trade in Sierra Leone. The ambassador will not talk. If squeezed he will spill the beans.
