Opposition politician Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray has announced a private support initiative aimed at assisting Sierra Leoneans deported from the United States, amid a reported rise in deportations since 2025.
In a public appeal, Mansaray called on deportees to reach out to him directly, revealing that he has secured arrangements with three restaurants to provide daily meals for affected individuals for up to one year. “I’m appealing to any Sierra Leonean deported from America to contact me,” he said, stressing that the offer is intended to ease the immediate hardship many returnees face upon arrival.
Citing figures he attributed to recent deportation data, Mansaray stated that 442 Sierra Leoneans have been deported from the US since 2025. Of that number, 259 are women and 183 are men. Despite the scale of the deportations, he noted that only two deportees have so far contacted him to access the support he is offering.
The growing number of deportations is linked to stricter enforcement of US immigration laws, including intensified removal of undocumented migrants, individuals who overstayed visas, and those with unresolved legal or criminal immigration cases. These policy shifts have increasingly affected migrants from several African countries, including Sierra Leone, as US authorities prioritise compliance with immigration regulations and border control measures.
