In a letter circulating on social media, Karpowership urged the government to honor the agreement as stated.

In the letter, they expressed their plea for a strong partnership with Sierra Leone, highlighting their innovative energy solutions that have provided a reliable source of energy since 2018, benefiting communities across the country.”

In the letter on April 9th, 2024, the Turkish Karpowership informed the the government of their intention to suspend their service if they aren’t paid by April 15, 2024.

Karpowership requested that the government pay the US$27,102,555 which corresponds to the overdue amount for their invoices from 2022 to 2023.

“We kindly request USD 27. 000.000 which corresponds to the overdue amounts for the invoices from the year 2022-2023 to the point before April 15, 5:00 pm Freetown Time,” it read.

Moving on in the letter, they warn that “If we do not receive the specified amount by April 15, 5:00 pm, we regret to inform you that we will stop complying with dispatched instructions and limit our generation to 6 MW at midnight of the same day in order to ensure that all critical infrastructure continues to receive electricity to most humanitarian needs.”

They went on to express the reasons as to why they cannot live up to the agreement anymore.

“Considering the financial strain, we are unable to sustain operations without payments. Please note that  due to market constraints and lender obligations, we can only accept this payment in USD. We hope to receive the payment prior to that date so that we can continue our operations uninterrupted,” they claimed.

At the end of the letter, they stated clearly why they would not adhere to any extension toward the announced date.

“This letter is without prejudice to and in the reservation of all our contractual and legal rights. No indulgence leniency or extension of time granted hereunder, will in any way preclude us from exercising any of our rights or remedies in the future,” they ended.
