Karpowership says it will restore full electricity supply to Sierra Leone once 30% of the country’s unpaid bills is settled.
Speaking to Global Times, Karpowership’s Commercial Operations Director, Emre Durmusoglu, said the company has worked closely with Sierra Leone since 2018 and remains committed to supporting the country’s energy needs. He praised the hospitality and strong community spirit, and described his experience working with local authorities as meaningful and positive.
The company operates a floating power plant called a Powership that supplies electricity directly to the national grid and has been a key part of Sierra Leone’s energy supply.
Durmusoglu noted that Karpowership fully understands the financial challenges in Sierra Leone and has worked diligently with government officials over the past six months. During this time, the company agreed to flexible payment plans and reduced its contracted capacity from 100MW to 50MW at the government’s request.
However, prolonged delays in payments and rising operational and fuel costs have put Karpowership in an untenable financial position. Because of this, the company issued a suspension notice on May 28, 2025.
To resume full service, Karpowership is now requesting payment of 30% of the outstanding amount under its contract. Despite the suspension, the company will continue to supply 6MW of power to keep critical infrastructure like hospitals, schools, and water pumps running.
Durmusoglu said the company values its commitments to partner countries and remains hopeful for a constructive solution. Karpowership is ready to restore full service immediately once an acceptable agreement is reached.
