On the gracious occasion of Independence Day, Hon. Yumkella, representing President Bio and the First Lady Madam Fatima Bio, visited the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH) at Fourah Bay Road with Social Welfare Minister Madam Baindu Dassama to see and welcome new-born babies.
According to Yumkella, “I had the best Independence Day celebration in more than a decade. Alongside Health Minister Dr. Austin Demby, Social Welfare Minister Madam Baindu Dassama, and Deputy Health Minister, I visited the newly renovated PCMH Maternity wing, where the President’s representatives welcomed the new babies born that day into our republic.”
He added that The President and First Lady gifted the newborns and their mothers, and it was heartwarming to witness their innocent eyes and the dedication of the doctors and health workers.
“The PCMH Maternity wing handles between 6,000 and 7,000 live births annually, with a significant decrease in the number of caesarian sections and maternal deaths, thanks to the new post-graduate training programs and recent renovations,” he said
He furthered that they were informed by Dr. Demby of the massive health sector solar electrification program for over 200 hospitals and PHUs across the country, courtesy of the UK government through FCDO and other donors like SE4All and the World Bank.
KKY added that “This program has a direct impact on the continuous drop in maternal mortality rates, which the doctors are determined to bring below 300 deaths per 100,000.”
The NGC leader further stated that the government has secured funding for five new mega-hospital campuses to be built over the next two to three years, which will include integrated surgical facilities, training, and housing for healthcare workers.
“As I looked at the newborns, I felt the immense responsibility we have to ensure their safety, health, peace, and prosperity, with access to education, clean water, and better employment opportunities“.
“I attended an interfaith service at State House in the morning, where the President read the gospel, and both the Bishop and Imam focused on peace and unity. I am hopeful that the Progressive Alliance will create a peaceful collaborative environment for the babies to grow up and fulfill their full potential. Happy Independence Day to all fellow compatriots! Wae We Put Salone fos, Paopa Salone Go Better,” he concluded.
