During a recent interview with VOA’s James Butty, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, the lawyer for Former President Ernest Bai Koroma, confirmed that they have formally requested for Koroma to be allowed to travel to his permanent residence in Makeni after the fifth day of intense interrogation at the CID headquarters.
Despite their request, permission for the former president’s return to Makeni is still pending.
Ernest Bai Koroma is slated to make his fifth appearance before the police on Thursday, December 14, 2023, as part of the ongoing investigation into his alleged involvement in the purported coup attempt on November 26. The legal counsel stressed that the former president has been fully cooperative during what he described as an extensive 25-hour interrogation.
The government’s decision to place Ernest Bai Koroma under house arrest was officially communicated by AFP, the French news agency, last Saturday. This development adds a layer of complexity to the situation, and Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara’s demand for Koroma’s return to Makeni underscores the legal team’s concerns about the conditions surrounding the investigation.
Kamara emphasized their formal request, stating, “As council, we’ve made a request for him to travel to Makeni where he has his permanent residence, and that request is yet to be granted.” The plea for Koroma’s return to Makeni appears to be grounded in a desire to ensure fair and reasonable treatment for the former president, especially considering the extensive duration of the interrogations.
The ongoing legal proceedings and the government’s decision to place Koroma under house arrest have intensified the political climate in the region. As the former president prepares for another round of questioning, the situation raises questions about the nature of the alleged coup attempt and the legal processes that will unfold in the coming days. The outcome of this case holds significant implications for the political landscape and the reputation of Ernest Bai Koroma.
