Freetown Terminal Limited welcomed high-level delegates from Liberia as part of a week-long regional engagement aimed at enhancing trade and logistics ties between Liberia and its neighboring countries.
The visit serves as an important assessment of operational capabilities in the region.
Port Director Jonathan from Liberia noted that the tour is a feasibility visit designed to showcase current operations in Sierra Leone. He emphasized the significance of the assessment, stating, “We’ve been able to assess the port in Conakry and are now in Freetown, where we feel very welcome.”
The delegation observed various installations and marine equipment during their tour, highlighting the development of human capacity at the terminal. Jonathan mentioned that nearly all of the 350 workers at the Sierra Leone terminal are local, reflecting a commitment to training and local ownership.
He added, “Our history with Sierra Leone is strong, and it’s essential to exchange ideas. If you can do it better, we can learn from it, and vice versa.”
Austin Taylor, Chair of Port and Maritime Affairs in the Liberian House of Representatives, emphasized the regional nature of the visit, which includes assessments in Guinea. He noted that the purpose is to inform a bill aimed at autonomizing Liberia’s ports, particularly the Port of Buchanan, where Freetown Terminal Limited (AGL) is interested in operations.
Taylor expressed his admiration for AGL’s operations in Sierra Leone, highlighting the potential for economic growth, employment, and skills development. “We aim to replicate Sierra Leone’s successful port management practices in Liberia,” he stated.
Magdalen Cooper, senior political advisor to the President of Liberia, also praised AGL’s work and investment levels. She expressed excitement about the possibility of AGL expanding its operations to Liberia and pledged to report her findings to the President in support of a partnership.
Captain Fabjanko Kokan, Regional Director for AGL in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia, confirmed that his office recently visited Guinea to share experiences and achievements. He underscored the importance of cooperation and partnership, stating, “In life, everything is possible with goodwill, understanding, and empathy.”
