The “Climate Resilience and Energy Transition” (CRET2024) conference, hosted by the Government of Sierra Leone through the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security (PI-CREF) and the Ministry of Energy, marked a significant milestone in the country’s push toward sustainability.

Under the theme “From Commitments to Actions,” the event brought together global partners, government officials, and stakeholders to announce major initiatives aimed at enhancing Sierra Leone’s resilience to climate change and driving its energy transition.

The conference highlighted several key commitments and investments, underscoring the country’s growing role in the global fight against climate change.

Key Announcements from CRET2024:

$105 Million Livestock Project with IFAD

A landmark collaboration between the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security will see the launch of a $105 million livestock project. This initiative is designed to bolster food security and support sustainable agriculture, particularly in the face of climate challenges affecting rural communities.

Denmark’s €3 Million Commitment for Decentralized Energy Solutions;

Denmark pledged €3 million to support decentralized energy solutions in Sierra Leone. The funding will focus on expanding energy access in underserved rural areas, contributing to the nation’s efforts to ensure that renewable energy solutions reach even the most remote communities.

$5 Million Clean Cooking Program;

A $5 million Clean Cooking Program, part of the Global Electric Cooking Coalition (GeCCO), was also launched at the conference. This initiative aims to promote cleaner, more energy-efficient cooking practices in Sierra Leone, reducing reliance on traditional biomass fuels like wood and charcoal, which are harmful to both health and the environment.

Technical Assistance for EDSA Reforms;

Sierra Leone’s Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) will receive technical support from several international partners, including Power Africa, the Danish Energy Agency, and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). This assistance is aimed at reforming EDSA, ensuring improved power distribution, and advancing the country’s overall energy transition goals.

Support from the German Embassy for PI-CREF Office;

The German Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to Sierra Leone’s climate and energy initiatives by pledging support for the PI-CREF office. This backing will further strengthen Sierra Leone’s capacity to address climate change and implement renewable energy projects.

Sierra Leone to Host DARES Conference;

Sierra Leone will play host to the regional Decentralized Energy Programs for Africa Conference (DARES), powered by the World Bank. This major event will provide a platform for African nations to discuss innovative energy solutions and strategies for decentralizing power systems across the continent.

Launch of Sierra Leone’s Energy Transition and Green Growth Plan;

One of the event’s major milestones was the launch of Sierra Leone’s Energy Transition and Green Growth Plan. This comprehensive strategy outlines the government’s vision for reducing carbon emissions, expanding renewable energy sources, and fostering green economic development in line with global sustainability goals.
