Member of Parliament for Pujehun District and Public Relations Officer of the Parliamentary Female Caucus, Mariama Zombo, has emphasized the importance of the Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system in promoting gender equality within the government.

Speaking passionately about the achievements made under the PR system, Zombo highlighted that it has facilitated a notable 30.4% representation of women in Parliament, a significant milestone that she fears could be jeopardized if the country reverts to the First Past the Post (FPTP) system.

Zombo described the FPTP system as inherently patriarchal and male-dominated, suggesting that it poses a threat to the progress made in women’s political representation.

She argued that the current system has allowed for greater inclusivity and diversity in governance, which is essential for addressing the unique challenges faced by women in society.

During her speech, Zombo called for stronger regulatory measures to protect and advance women’s representation in politics.

She asserted that without these safeguards, the gains achieved could easily be reversed, undermining the efforts to achieve gender equality in governance.

Her advocacy for the PR system has been classified as a growing recognition of the need for electoral reforms that support female participation in politics.
