A delegation from the Michigan State National Guard, accompanied by the U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone and Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Defense, paid a courtesy visit to President Dr. Julius Maada Bio at State House on Tuesday. The visit marked a significant step in finalizing a State Partnership Programme (SPP) between the Michigan State National Guard and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.

Deputy Minister of Defense Col (Rtd) Muana Brima Massaquoi introduced the delegation, expressing gratitude to President Bio for hosting the team. He revealed that the visit aimed to formalize the long-planned partnership, which has been in development since 2019, culminating in the signing of a letter of consent to solidify cooperation between the two military forces.

Major General Paul Rogers, Adjutant General of the Michigan National Guard and head of the U.S. delegation, highlighted the importance of the agreement. He noted that while Sierra Leone is the latest to join the SPP, the country’s involvement presents an exciting opportunity for collaboration.

In response, President Bio welcomed the delegation and praised the ongoing efforts to establish the partnership. He emphasized his government’s commitment to the program, which he believes will enhance national security and stability, aligning with Sierra Leone’s broader development goals.

The President reiterated his dedication to building on the progress achieved over the past six years, stressing the importance of both long-term and short-term objectives to ensure the program’s success. The State Partnership Programme aims to foster military cooperation and bolster security initiatives between the United States and Sierra Leone.
