Six military personnel have been sentenced to lengthy jail terms after being found guilty of subversive activities aimed at unseating President Julius Maada Bio.

The verdicts were handed down by a Court Martial during its 26th sitting on February 12, 2025, following the trial of the accused.

The six individuals were arraigned on October 17, 2024, for eight counts of mutiny, failure to suppress mutiny, and desertion, to which they all pleaded “not guilty.”

The accused military personnel, led by Major Patrick Abu Ordende Sesay, were found guilty of their involvement in a plot to destabilize the government. The sentences were as follows:

  1. Major Patrick Abu Ordende Sesay (1st Accused) – Found guilty on all five counts and sentenced to a maximum jail term of 75 years.

  2. Major Juana Kabbah (2nd Accused) – Found guilty on all four counts and sentenced to a maximum jail term of 60 years.

  3. Major Foday Sumana Kamara (3rd Accused) – Found guilty on all four counts and sentenced to a maximum jail term of 60 years.

  4. Major Ibrahim Abu Bakarr Bangura (4th Accused) – Found guilty on all four counts and sentenced to a maximum jail term of 50 years.

  5. Lieutenant Zainab Amara Suwu (5th Accused) – Found guilty on all four counts and sentenced to a maximum jail term of 50 years.

  6. Corporal Mohamed Koroma (6th Accused) – Found guilty on all five counts and sentenced to a maximum jail term of 75 years.

The case, titled The State vs Major Patrick Abu Ordende Sesay alias PAO and 5 Others, was vigorously prosecuted by 15 lawyers, including JAK Sesay, PA Williams from the Law Officers’ Department, and Colonel MBS Kamara from the Directorate of Defence Legal of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF). The prosecution presented 16 witnesses and 47 exhibits to prove their case.

The accused were represented by a team of defense lawyers, including I Bangura, S Elleamoh, OV Garber, E Sanders, C Kamara, A Yankay-Kargbo, and JK Kobba. Each accused person testified in their defense, attempting to disprove the prosecution’s case.

The trial was presided over by Judge Advocate Mark Ngegba, Court Martial President Colonel SMO George, and a panel of board members including Lieutenant-Colonel PS Brima, Major MN Sillah, Major S Falama, Major I Samura, and Warrant Officer (Class 1) I Fofanah.
