Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has today, Thursday 11 August 2022 issued a press release debunking allegations on social media that the country’s Military is divided and they they supported yesterday’s protest in order to overthrow the ruling government.
According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) there attention was drawn to audios and other publications making rounds on social media platforms alleging that, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) is divided.
“The audio further purported that, the RSLAF supports the protest staged on 10 August 2022 and has threatened to topple the constitutionally elected government of the Republic of Sierra Leone,” the Ministry stated.
The MOD further noted that the allegations contained in the said audio and other publications are baseless, unfounded and the works of fiction deliberately designed to mislead the people of Sierra Leone and the international community.
“The RSLAF is a unified and coherent force, law abiding and loyal to the constitutionally elected government of the Republic of Sierra Leone. The general public is assured of the RSLAF unreserved commitment to protect the country from internal and external threats and to also support the Sierra Leone Police on internal security matters through the Military Aid to Civil Power (MACP),” MoD stated.
The Ministry of Defence went on to inform the general public that the RSLAF will maintain its professionalism at all times and will fully protect its good reputation in the discharge of its constitutional mandate.
