The Ministry of Health has launched its second Nationwide Health Train Campaign in Kailahun District, as part of its ongoing efforts to provide essential healthcare services to some of Sierra Leone’s most remote communities.
The campaign, led by Deputy Minister 1, Professor Charles Senessie, is aimed at strengthening the country’s healthcare system by offering critical health interventions, including screening, testing, treatment, vaccinations, and the distribution of essential medical supplies.
The initiative, first introduced earlier this year in Moyamba District, is a key part of the Ministry’s strategy to ensure that all Sierra Leoneans, especially those in hard-to-reach areas, have access to quality healthcare.

The Health Train Campaign is traveling across the country to deliver medical services directly to the communities, addressing gaps in healthcare access where facilities are limited or difficult to reach.
“This nationwide initiative is about bringing healthcare closer to people, especially those in rural and underserved areas,” said Professor Senessie. “By deploying medical teams and providing essential health services in these communities, we are addressing some of the key barriers that prevent people from accessing care. This campaign aligns with our broader goal to ensure that every citizen has access to quality healthcare, no matter where they live.”
One of the main focuses of the Kailahun District leg of the campaign is to assess the implementation of the Life Stages approach to healthcare. This model, introduced by the Ministry, emphasizes providing comprehensive and continuous healthcare services to patients at every stage of life.

Healthcare providers are tasked with ensuring that the needs of individuals – from childhood to old age – are met through tailored services that respond to the full spectrum of health requirements.
“The Life Stages approach is designed to deliver person-centered care, ensuring that every stage of a person’s life is supported with the appropriate health services,” said Professor Senessie. “We are here to ensure that the healthcare professionals in these areas understand and implement this approach effectively, as it is central to the Ministry’s health reform agenda.”
The Nationwide Health Train Campaign is part of the broader vision of the Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, who has made it a priority to provide life-saving medical care to every Sierra Leonean, regardless of their location.

“Our goal is clear: to ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to healthcare. This campaign is just one part of our ongoing efforts to transform the healthcare system and ensure that health services are available to all Sierra Leoneans,” Dr. Demby stated.
The Ministry of Health has outlined plans to continue this campaign, taking health services to all districts across Sierra Leone. As the Health Train moves through the country, it aims to improve healthcare accessibility, promote preventative care, and strengthen the overall health infrastructure.

Local residents in Kailahun District have welcomed the initiative, expressing appreciation for the efforts made by the Ministry to address the healthcare needs of rural communities. For many, the Health Train Campaign represents a lifeline in a district where medical services are often limited and access to healthcare is a significant challenge.
As the campaign progresses, the Ministry of Health has expressed commitment to its goal of delivering quality, lifesaving healthcare to all, ensuring that no one is excluded from the benefits of improved health services.
