The Ministry of Information has issued a clarification regarding its recent statement on the ongoing deliberations surrounding the Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Bill.

The clarification comes after concerns were raised about remarks attributed to Archbishop Edward Tamba Charles during a December 30, 2024, meeting.

In a public notice released today, the Ministry addressed interpretations of its earlier communication that suggested the Archbishop had formally endorsed proposed amendments to the Bill. Officials stated that following subsequent engagements with the Archbishop, it was confirmed that while he appreciated the government’s willingness to engage religious leaders, he and the Inter-Religious Council have not made a public or formal declaration on the matter.

“The Archbishop has expressed his appreciation for the government’s readiness to accommodate the concerns of religious leaders,” the Ministry’s statement noted, emphasizing its commitment to constructive dialogue.

The Ministry reiterated its dedication to collaboration with all stakeholders, including religious groups, to develop solutions that respect Sierra Leone’s diverse values. It called on stakeholders to actively and constructively participate in discussions for the advancement of the Bill and the nation’s progress.
