During the weekend, the Ministry of Social Welfare and the Commission for Persons with Disabilities distributed bags of rice to several disability organizations in Freetown, underscoring their commitment to supporting vulnerable communities.

The distribution process was led by Melrose Karminty, Minister of Social Welfare and Brima Sheriff, Commissioner of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, after a weeklong district tour with a similar gesture.

Disability Organisations benefited from the distribution are: HEPPO at Pademba Road, House of Jesus at Bus Station, HYDA Association at ECOWAS Street, and the Wilberforce Street Association.

The gesture was aimed at easing food challenges faced by these organisations, particularly during the rainy season when the movement of persons with disabilities is further restricted.

During the distribution, the Minister reassured beneficiaries of the government’s commitment to their welfare. She reminded them that her appointment was not only to serve as Minister but also as a mother to advocate for their needs and ensure inclusivity in national development.

She further stressed that under President Bio’s leadership, the concerns of persons with disabilities would not be sidelined, but rather treated as a priority in the government’s agenda for social protection and empowerment.

Echoing similar sentiments, the Commissioner for Persons with Disability, Brima Sheriff emphasized that the Ministry’s actions were directly aligned with the President’s broader agenda of inclusivity and social support.

He called for trust, unity, and patience as the Ministry is working with disability groups to design long-term strategies that will improve their livelihoods. Representatives of the various organizations, visibly moved to tears, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Minister and, by extension, President Bio, describing the government as a caring and supportive one that has not forgotten them in these difficult times.
