The Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) welcomed over 3,000 newly admitted students at an orientation ceremony held at the Great Hall of the Goderich Campus on Wednesday.
Vice Chancellor and Principal of MMTU, Dr. Philip John Kanu, addressed the students, emphasizing that the event marked the beginning of their academic journey filled with opportunities. He highlighted the transformative power of education, urging students to think beyond earning degrees and strive for excellence.
Dr. Kanu assured the students that lecturers and staff would support them in their academic pursuits and encouraged them to seek help when needed. He stressed the importance of discipline, perseverance, and focus, noting that success requires determination and commitment.
He advised students to uphold the university’s principles, report sexual harassment, dress appropriately, and actively participate in academic and extracurricular activities. He warned against paying for unauthorized materials such as lecture notes, assignments, and field trips and urged students to ensure full payment of fees to avoid penalties.
Dr. Kanu also informed students that they would not be promoted to the next level with any outstanding references and reminded them of upcoming university events, including Faculty and Cultural Day and Games and Sports Day.
Earlier, the Vice Principal and Director of Academic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Alie Jalloh, welcomed the new students and described the orientation as a significant milestone. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but assured them of the administration’s full support.
Dr. Jalloh urged students to take responsibility for their learning, complete assignments on time, attend classes regularly, read official notices, and stay informed through the university’s website. He reaffirmed the dedication of staff and lecturers to guiding them throughout their academic journey.
The event featured statements from Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments, and a saxophone performance by a student.
