Mohamed Sheshu Sheriff, appointed as Executive Secretary of Sierra Leone’s APRM National Secretariat, demonstrated strong leadership and commitment to democratic governance. In his first 100 days, he initiated the APRM Targeted Review on “Unconstitutional Change of Government,” prioritized media interactions, and fostered collaborations. Despite challenges in mobility and office space, he overcame them through partnerships. Sheriff showcased Sierra Leone’s achievements at international forums and supported key reports highlighting the country’s commitment to regional and global advancement.

Notable Achievements:

Strategic Vision and Direction: Mr. Sheriff’s tenure has been marked by a clear strategic vision aligned with President Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to democratic good governance, regional integration, peace, and security in Africa.

Launch of Targeted Review: One of Sheriff’s major milestones was the successful coordination of the APRM Targeted Review on “Unconstitutional Change of Government” (UCG) in Sierra Leone. This initiative, initiated by President Bio in 2022, addresses critical issues related to unconstitutional government changes in Africa.

Organizational Capacity Enhancement: Recognizing the importance of a unified team, Sheriff ensured that every staff member, from top-tier to janitorial staff, had access to a computer and Mifi internet with a three-month subscription, thus enhancing organizational capacity and unity.

National Governing Council Establishment: In compliance with the APRM’s statute, Sheriff established the National Governing Council (NGC) of the APRM in Sierra Leone, chaired by Ambassador Soullay Daramy and deputized by Madam Abigael Renner.

Global Representation: Sheriff actively participated in the 33rd Ordinary Session of the African Peer Review Forum, held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, in February 2024, alongside President Bio. Additionally, he supported Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh and Minister Amara Kallon in delivering pivotal reports at the African Union’s 37th Assembly of Heads of State and Government.

Strategic Planning and Country Review Progress: The APRM Sierra Leone Office, under Sheriff’s leadership, has made significant progress in its strategic planning and country review processes. The draft of a five-year strategic plan, awaiting stakeholder validation, aims to guide the implementation of the APRM in Sierra Leone.

Challenges Faced:

Despite these achievements, Sheriff encountered challenges related to mobility, visibility, and office space. To overcome these obstacles, he actively sought collaboration with democracy activists, development partners, diplomatic missions, and appealed to the government and the private sector for support.

Mohamed Sheshu Sheriff’s first 100 days in office exemplify a period of transformative leadership and dedication to the APRM’s objectives, showcasing Sierra Leone’s commitment to democratic governance, regional integration, and socio-economic development.
