On Monday, June 2nd 2025, Khalid Akhsas, Chargé d’Affaires and Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco, visited Rt Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas in Freetown to garner support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal under its sovereignty.

During the meeting, Akhsas urged the speaker to publicly commend the United Kingdom’s recent endorsement of Morocco’s proposal, which was expressed in a joint communiqué signed by UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. He emphasized the significance of this endorsement, noting that it represents strong support from a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

Akhsas highlighted that this endorsement aligns with international legitimacy and reflects Sierra Leone’s ongoing support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara, particularly following Sierra Leone’s opening of a consulate general in Dakhla in 2021. He expressed optimism that this momentum could help resolve the long-standing regional dispute and establish lasting peace.

In response, Rt Hon Speaker Thomas welcomed the Moroccan delegation and praised the UK’s endorsement as a commendable move. He agreed to publicly commend Morocco for achieving this significant support and acknowledged the proposed training opportunities for Sierra Leone’s parliamentary staffers.
