The Special Baby Care Unit at Bo Government Hospital has received widespread praise for its successful resuscitation of newborn infants, a crucial service that has saved the lives of numerous babies within the first 28 days of their lives.
Mothers, overwhelmed with gratitude, have commended the unit’s dedicated staff for their lifesaving efforts.
However, amidst the celebration of these successes, the mothers and caregivers express great concerns over the pressing issue of inadequate sleeping arrangements for parents whose infants are admitted to the facility.
Approximately 100 babies are admitted to the Special Baby Care Unit every month, where they receive specialized care and attention.
Mothers and caregivers, while thankful for the services provided, find themselves in dire living conditions. They are compelled to sleep on the hospital veranda, exposed to the elements, enduring mosquito bites, cold weather, and unpleasant odors from nearby toilet facilities. Despite their resilience, these conditions make them vulnerable to illnesses, further complicating an already challenging situation.
In a heartfelt plea, these mothers and caregivers are now calling upon the government and the hospital management to urgently address the lack of proper sleeping arrangements. Their sacrifices to be close to their ailing infants should not compromise their health and well-being.
Hospital officials, when approached, acknowledged the issue and stated that efforts are underway to construct two new buildings with assistance from their partners to solve the accommodation challenges.
However, the completion of these buildings seems to be a distant solution, leaving the mothers and caregivers in a risky situation until then. The situation highlights the immense resilience of these mothers, who, despite the challenging circumstances, remain steadfast in their dedication to their newborns’ well-being.
Their determination underscores the urgent need for immediate action to provide them with decent living conditions while their infants receive essential care.
The Bo Government Hospital management and the authorities are urged to expedite the construction process and ensure that no mother or caregiver has to endure such hardships in their pursuit of ensuring their child’s health and survival.
