Sierra Leone’s Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Hon. Nabeela Tunis, has held high-level talks with Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, in Kingston, as both countries continue to deepen Africa–Caribbean cooperation in tourism, culture, and heritage.
The engagement forms part of Sierra Leone’s broader efforts to strengthen diplomatic and cultural relations with Caribbean nations, using tourism, culture, and heritage as tools for international cooperation and economic growth. The collaboration has aided Sierra Leone’s growing presence in the Caribbean while encouraging people-to-people exchanges and shared tourism initiatives.
These ties were recently seen in Freetown during the successful Reggae Fest, which celebrated Caribbean music and culture and reinforced Sierra Leone’s commitment to embracing its diasporic connections as part of its cultural diplomacy agenda.
Discussions in Kingston also focused on shared priorities around tourism resilience, capacity building, and sustainable destination development, with both ministers reaffirming the importance of knowledge exchange and joint programming.
Sierra Leone shares deep historical ties with Jamaican, dating back to the early 19th century when Jamaican Maroons were repatriated to Freetown following Britain’s abolition of the transatlantic slave trade, an enduring link that continues to shape cultural and diplomatic relations between Sierra Leone and Jamaica today.
