On Monday, 25th March 2024, the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) took the Ministers of Trade, Labour, Works, Transport, and other officials on a tour of the ongoing construction of the Sewa Grounds Market, adjacent to Victoria Park in Freetown.
The Director-General of NASSIT, Mohamed Fuaad Daboh, informed the officials that the purpose of the visit was to provide them with first-hand information on the status of the construction project.
He added that this visit would set the stage for President Julius Maada Bio to officially commission the Market, making it ready to serve its intended purpose.
Architect Abel Onomake, the Sawa Ground Market Project Manager, expressed his gratitude to the Director General of NASSIT, the visiting ministers, and their entourage for attending the pre-commissioning of the project.
He thanked NASSIT for entrusting him with the responsibility to oversee the project. He further explained that, after the project was assigned to him, he hired seven different contractors to work on various aspects of the project, ensuring they used time efficiently.
Furthermore, Architect Abel highlights the modern features of the construction, including CCTV cameras, large water storage facilities and numerous warehouses and shops of different sizes to fulfill the needs for the different operations and businesses the market would house.
He revealed that the market is as large as two combined football pitches and can accommodate over 2,500 traders.
Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, praised Architect Abel Onomake, describing him as “a celebrity” for accomplishing such a magnificent feat.
He said he now feels confident to report to his boss President Bio that the task he had given them to construct a modern market for the people of Sierra Leone is now 99% complete and ready for commissioning at a time the President chooses, which he said would not be too long because the President is eager to see his people use the facilities.
Minister Rahman also added that they too are impressed with the facility provided in the market complex, and that all that is needed is to ensure that once occupancy of the market complex begins, the occupants should be encouraged and monitored to take good care of the facilities.
