In a press release on January 28th, 2024, Sierra Leone’s National Telecommunication Commission (Natcom) addressed a resurfaced video related to ROBO CALL SCAMS, emphasizing that the issue had been effectively handled in May 2019. The video, circulating on social media, depicted fraudsters/scammers using the National Destination Code (NDC) (021) from Sierra Leone.

During the 2019 incident, Natcom conducted a thorough investigation and conveyed their concerns to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States. The Commission expressed disappointment over the “One Ring” Robo Call Phone Scam, primarily targeting U.S. subscribers. Additionally, Natcom notified the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to remove the NDC (021) from their database and international carriers, hindering the activities of the perpetrators.

The statement clarified that the NDC (021) has not been in use by any Sierra Leonean service providers since 2019. However, Natcom assured the public of their unwavering commitment to investigating and addressing any future scams that might impact subscribers or countries.

The Commission’s proactive measures, including international cooperation with the FCC and ITU, underscore their dedication to consumer satisfaction and the ongoing fight against fraud. The press release concluded with a firm commitment from Natcom to thoroughly investigate and uncover the root causes of any potential future scams, ensuring the security and confidence of the public.
