Following his appointment on the 12th October, 2022 by President Bio in accordance with Section 17 (1) of the National Land Commission Act No.19 of 2022, the Commissioner General of the National Land Commission is set to roll out operations in amending cropping issues related to land ownership in Sierra Leone.
In his statement, Sheik Sawbu Sowa- the Commissioner General of the Land Commission said, ‘’The National Land Commission is a corporate body set up by the government of Sierra Leone which is directly answerable to the Ministry of Lands with the responsibilities to take inventory of all private, government and public lands in the country. It is also responsible to introduce titles of registration and to register all lands in the country and takes over the management of land issues countrywide’’.
He further disclosed that, the Land Commission will have a National Secretariat that will be based in Freetown with different departments to target land issues and working directly under the Ministry of Lands.
Referencing the land ownership duplication, He pointed out that, the Commission is set to look into and minimize the issues of land ownership duplication by introducing a ‘Title Registration System’ wherein the land itself is registered and correctly documented as compared vehicle registration.
The Commission will be decentralised and have Districts Offices that will do same as the National Secretariat and they would also have Chiefdom Land Commissions which will be headed by the Paramount Chief and a representative of every sector of the Chiefdom as will constitute land owners and non-land owners in the said chiefdom to ensure a committee that is ready to do the work diligently.
