The National Election Watch (NEW) has continued its district-level elections as part of efforts to strengthen internal democratic processes within the organisation.

Between 3rd and 8th March 2026, elections were successfully conducted in eight operational districts across the country. The districts include Moyamba, Bonthe Island, Bonthe Mainland, Bo, Falaba, Tonkolili, Karene, and Koinadugu. The elections were organised to fill key leadership positions within the districts, including District Coordinator, District Secretary, and District Team Members.

According to NEW, the process has so far been peaceful and participatory, with representatives from about 177 member organisations actively taking part in the elections across the eight districts.

In addition to the electoral process, NEW has also been engaging the public through simultaneous radio discussions in these districts. The radio programs are aimed at educating citizens about the implementation of the recommendations from the Tripartite Committee and explaining the organization’s position on current national issues relating to governance and democratic development.

NEW stated that elections in the remaining nine operational districts will be conducted in the coming week as the organization continues its nationwide internal democratic exercise.

The district-level electoral process is being supported by International IDEA through funding provided by the European Union under the Sierra Leone Democracy Strengthening Programme.
