The National Grand Coalition (NGC) has officially announced the termination of its political alliance with the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).

At a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Mambo, NGC Chair and Leader Jesmed F. Suma declared that the partnership formed ahead of the 2023 general elections is no longer functional.

The agreement, signed at the Bintumani Hotel in Freetown, committed the NGC to support President Julius Maada Bio’s SLPP in exchange for political cooperation and compensation.

Suma stated that the SLPP has not fulfilled its commitments under the arrangement. “Two years into this partnership, the SLPP has failed to honour its side of the agreement. We are very disappointed,” he told journalists, adding that the alliance provided “no practical benefit” to the NGC.

The party leader reaffirmed his leadership under the NGC constitution, criticized what he described as inconsistent actions by state institutions including the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC), the judiciary, and the Sierra Leone Police and announced the suspension of certain members for alleged violations of party rules.

Public Relations Officer Wilfred Alimamy Wise described the alliance as politically costly but emphasized that reconciliation within the party is now a top priority. The NGC leadership called on former and aggrieved members to return as the party focuses on rebuilding its grassroots structures and restoring political credibility.

The dissolution of the alliance could affect the balance of power among Sierra Leone’s opposition parties as the country moves toward future elections.
