Baze University in Abuja, Nigeria has named their prost graduate school after Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio. The University made the announcement during the 12th convocation ceremony following a commencement speech by Bio on Saturday morning, 8th November 2025.
During his speech, Bio encouraged the young graduates to embrace education as a pathway to service, innovation, and nation-building.
He further the class of 2025 to be visionary leaders in society to lead Africa’s transformation from aid reliance to self-sufficiency.
From a modest beginning in 2011, Baze University has grown into standard tertiary institution in the Nigerian capital, Abuja. The university which started with just three faculties now boasts of several faculties with quality teaching and international staff. The university also boasts of cordial relationship with the UK’s Association of Chartered Accountant through a partnership.
This is the first time a tertiary learning institution in Nigeria is naming their post graduate school after a seating Sierra Leonean president, despite the two countries sharing a deep history in the education sector.
Bio, during his campaign, made an audacious plan to make education free and accessible for primary and secondary school pupils. The President announced the Free Education project, after support international partners like World Bank in his country. The initiative saw increased number of re-enrolment of pupils in schools across the country making education accessible to less-priviledged pupils, especially in rural Sierra Leone.
Bio’s administration has vowed to ensure education is accessible to all Sierra Leonean pupils thereby boosting the human capital development of the West African nation.
