Njala University is set to host the official handing over ceremony for the construction of a 1MW solar power plant on Thursday, 29th May, 2025, at Mokonde Campus.
The event, as a part of the broader national agenda, aimed at enhancing clean energy accessibility and affordability across Sierra Leone.
Notably, the ceremony will be led by President Julius Maada Bio, who has championed a national energy agenda focused on providing reliable and affordable energy to all regions of the country.
Following the official ceremony, a public lecture will be delivered by Hon. Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security (PI-CREF) and the Energy Governance Coordinating Group (EGCG). Dr. Yumkella’s lecture will focus on the theme “Energy Transition and Human Capital Development.”
Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, a renowned energy expert and alumnus of Njala University, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. He stated, “This is more than a power plant. It is a beacon of hope for our students, communities, and future.”
Dr. Yumkella described the importance of energy as a vital component for economic growth, education, and innovation in Sierra Leone.
The solar project reportedly represents a full-circle moment for Dr. Yumkella, who once studied at Njala University. He noted that the initiative not only provides essential infrastructure but also contributes to the university’s transformation by supplying electricity to its lecture halls and other facilities.
