Opposition Chief Whip in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara has admonished the public on issue of environmental degradation.
Kamara brought up the issue during the Presidential Nominees Approval as well as Presidential debate on Thursday 7th November 2024 in Parliament.
According to Kamara, the issue of environmental degradation has become peculiar to the extent that it is inhibiting the existence of the citizens.
Kamara further recalled on how the capital city and other part of the country were full of mangroves in which lately having been destroyed due to erection of dwellings and these consequences are been faced by other communities would.
Furthermore, he proceeded to note that they as leaders have to take strong decision to save the environment irrespective of affiliation. He emphasized that the issue of environmental protection should be depoliticized as that is the only way to exonerate the nation from hazardous activities as the suffering of people is man-made.
He also spoke on the current power outage that has become order of the day in the country. He stated that a country like Sierra Leone is blessed with enormous natural resources, including rain, sun, wind etc which are essential sources of energy, yet the country is depending on Karpownership which he described as an adding insult to the suffering of the citizens. He maintained that no matter the cost of Bubuna Phase Two it’s far better than karpowrsip as it’s a bonafide property to the nation.
“No matter which political party you belong we haven’t done enough for our people”, he made this statement in connection with the unfortunate unfolding in the country as the people are yet to realize enough from them as leaders and it’s high time for them to give back to society.
He made it explicit that celebrating Leone Power as a private entity it’s sounds infuriating as the country possesses innumerable resources that are importance to provide stable energy for the citizens. He therefore called on government and other entities to prioritize local content policy.
