Former All People’s Congress (APC) Deputy Secretary General, Hon. Osman Timbo, has publicly challenged the leadership of Dr. Samura Kamara in the recent dialogue on the disputed 2023 elections.
In an interview on Radio Democracy’s “Good Morning Salone” program, Timbo revealed his reasons for resigning, placing particular emphasis on his disagreement with Kamara’s role as head of the dialogue committee.
Timbo argued that Kamara’s appointment was inappropriate, given the context of the contested election. “Dr. Samura Kamara was only supposed to head the dialogue team if President Bio was involved,” Timbo stated, underscoring the significance of their positions as the primary contenders in the recent elections.
He expressed disappointment with the dialogue process, claiming that the National Advisory Committee’s (NAC) approach did not align with the APC’s expectations.
Timbo reiterated his stance that the 2023 elections were not credible, asserting that Kamara had a “clear lead” and that the mandate was “stolen from the people.”
Timbo’s critique comes amidst a complex political landscape, with the Tripartite Committee, comprised of representatives from the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), the APC, and moral guarantors, tasked with reforming the electoral system. While the committee’s final report, featuring 80 joint recommendations, has been lauded for its potential to improve future elections, deep divisions remain.
Dr. Kamara, in a separate interview with Voice of America (VOA), voiced similar concerns about the 2023 elections, citing a lack of transparency and accountability. He emphasized the APC’s continued demand for the publication of aggregated polling station results and the resignation of electoral commission leadership.
Kamara also highlighted the “divergent areas” identified in the Tripartite Committee report, specifically the lack of resolution on the disputed election results.
