Former APC Member of Parliament Hon. Osman Timbo has written to the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC), requesting its intervention over the conduct of the All People’s Congress (APC) lower-level constituency elections.

In a statement issued after the party postponed its constituency elections, Timbo disclosed that he had earlier written to the APC’s Internal Elections Management Committee (IEMC) on 10 June, seeking a practice direction on how to handle positions where candidates were unopposed.

According to him, despite several formal and informal follow-ups, he did not receive an official response from the IEMC before the elections were postponed.

Timbo argued that where a candidate is unopposed at the close of nominations, there should be no election, insisting that such candidates should instead be declared duly elected in line with the 1991 Constitution and the Public Elections Act 2022.

He maintained that his concerns are based on legal provisions rather than political preference.

The lawmaker further stated that adopting this approach would require the party to publish a final list of candidates well ahead of polling, preventing confusion and alleged manipulation on election day.

He also called for a fixed deadline for nominations, noting that applications were still being accepted even after the official closing date.

Timbo said declaring unopposed candidates elected would reduce unnecessary financial costs, ease logistical challenges, lower pressure on the party’s limited resources, and minimize tensions involving stakeholders, including the police and the PPRC.

He added that the move would allow election officials to focus their attention on constituencies where contests actually exist.

The APC constituency elections were recently postponed, with the party yet to announce a new date.
