The Parliament of Sierra Leone has issued a clear statement to correct false information circulating about the new Child Rights Act, 2025.
Some reports, including one from Radio Democracy 98.1FM, claimed the law criminalizes Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and sets a fine of One Hundred Million Leones (NLe 100,000,000) for anyone caught circumcising girls under 18.
Parliament says these claims are wrong. The Child Rights Act does not include any fines, penalties, or punishments related to FGM. The lawmakers urge media outlets, civil society groups, and the public to check the official law or contact the Legislative Committee before sharing information on this topic.
The Parliament reminded everyone that it remains focused on protecting children’s rights and will continue to share all laws and changes clearly and openly.
Why should they remove F.G.M,it is our culture and it most be their.
