Parliament has called on mobile network operators Orange and Africell to develop a new affordable data package to replace the discontinued Le 60 (1MBPS) offer, which the companies had previously classified as a promotional service.
The directive comes amid growing public concern over mobile data affordability and service quality.
The National Telecommunications Authority (NatCA) has been tasked with leading the review process. Parliament emphasized that the outcome must reflect a balance between consumer protection and maintaining a business-friendly environment for telecom investors.
During a recent inclusive stakeholder meeting, Members of Parliament, journalists, and civil society representatives raised pressing concerns about poor network coverage in certain regions and the lack of meaningful engagement between telecom providers and subscribers. These issues, they argued, continue to undermine digital access and customer satisfaction.
In response, both Orange and Africell acknowledged the challenges and presented their existing customer service structures, reaffirming their commitment to improving service delivery. However, lawmakers insisted that more must be done to ensure equitable access to mobile services across the country.
Hon. Boston Munda, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Communication and Technology, urged NatCA to ensure that the revised offer is not only affordable but also responsive to the needs of ordinary citizens. “We must protect our people while also creating an environment that encourages investment,” he stated.
NatCA Director General Amara Brewah assured Parliament that his agency is actively engaging the telecom companies to develop solutions that demonstrate genuine concern for public welfare. “We want the companies to give back to the communities in ways that show interest and care,” Brewah said.
The revised data offer, once finalized, will be presented back to Parliament for approval. Stakeholders hope it will mark a turning point in the country’s digital inclusion efforts, ensuring that mobile connectivity remains accessible and affordable for all.
