The Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Technical and Higher Education, chaired by Hon. Joseph Williams-Lamin, has engaged the Management of Freetown Polytechnic in an oversight meeting to review the institution’s achievements, challenges, and plans to strengthen technical and vocational education in Sierra Leone.

The engagement, held at the Parliament Administrative Building Conference Hall, saw Members of Parliament commend the Polytechnic’s role in developing middle-level technical manpower through skills training and professional development programmes.

The Committee encouraged the institution to strengthen collaboration with government ministries and development partners to expand youth empowerment initiatives, improve employment opportunities for graduates, and promote technical education nationwide.

During the meeting, Management highlighted key achievements, including the expansion of Centres of Excellence, the introduction of degree programmes through university partnerships, the graduation of more than 1,000 students, and collaborations with international institutions, including a Chinese university.

Discussions also focused on challenges affecting the institution, including delays in government subventions, stalled infrastructure projects due to funding constraints, campus security concerns, environmental issues, and land encroachment.

Members of the Committee assured the Polytechnic that the concerns raised would be presented to Parliament, while pledging to engage relevant authorities to seek solutions. The Committee reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to supporting reforms and investments aimed at improving the quality and sustainability of technical and higher education in Sierra Leone.
