Police Officers, working in collaboration with Community Safety Volunteers (CSVs), have arrested one Mohamed Bangura in Dambala Town after he was found in possession of an unregistered TVS Star motorcycle and four bales of dried leaves believed to be cannabis.
According to police sources, the suspect was apprehended during routine patrols aimed at curbing illicit drug trafficking and other criminal activities in the area. The exhibits, including the motorbike and the suspected cannabis, have been transferred to the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) Regional Office in Bo for further investigation.
Authorities say the arrest is part of ongoing efforts to combat organised crime and drug-related offences across the southern region. The suspect remains in custody while investigations continue.
Drug trafficking has been a major issue in Sierra Leone in recent years. Security personnel are struggling to curb the increasing number of drug traffickers in the West African nation. Recently, the Sierra Leone Police, together with the military and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) launched a major campaign to apprehend illicit drug dealers in the capital, Freetown and some major cities and towns in the country.
With an increased number of addicts among the local population, especially young people, experts have called on the government to increase surveillance in key entry points including the water quay and border crossings.
