The Sierra Leone Independent Police Complaints Board (IPCB)  has informed the public that it has commenced a preliminary investigation  into an alleged police- shooting incident at Mile 38 Security Checkpoint on Sunday 2nd April, 2023.

The Press Release Stated that it is alleged that some personnel of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) discharged firearms at the time the convoy of Dr. Samura Kamara – the presidential candidate of the All People’s Congress (APC) was at the said location, while traveling from Lungi to Freetown.

According to the Board, the said inquest is in pursuance of Regulation 3 (1) (c) of The Independent Police Complaints Board Regulations, 2013 (Constitutional Instrument No. 11 of 2013), which provides for an investigation into “a shooting incident where a police officer has discharged firearm or killed a person”.

The IPCB noted that it has initiated this investigation pursuant to Regulation 9 which mandates the institution to “conduct an investigation on its own initiative or on the basis of a complaint made by a member of the public, a police officer or a public body”.

The board encouraged all to assist with any relevant information, including videos and photos pertaining the said investigation.
