The Sierra Leone Police, collaborating with various stakeholders, carried out the incineration of a substantial quantity of narcotics valued at over two hundred thousand United States Dollars, in a concerted effort to combat the scourge of narcotic drugs.

The burning exercise took place on Saturday, April 20th, 2024, at the Transnational Organised Crime Unit Headquarters (TOCU) situated at Rogbangba Junction/Hastings.

Preceding the burning ceremony, a press briefing was held, during which key figures addressed the media. Mr. Andrew Jaiah Kaikai, the Executive Director of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, emphasized that allegations suggesting Sierra Leone as a hub for drug trafficking are baseless and unfounded. He highlighted the government’s commitment to combating the drug menace, citing a recent Town Hall meeting at the Bintumani Conference Centre, which led to the declaration of a National Health Emergency on narcotic drugs. Additionally, Mr. Kaikai noted the establishment of a National Task Force, headed by Professor Sahr Foday, to spearhead efforts in the fight against drugs.

Commissioner Joseph Ibrahim Lahai, representing the Inspector General of Police, reiterated the Sierra Leone Police’s dedication to combating narcotic drugs. He emphasized the importance of protecting the future of the youth by discouraging drug trafficking activities. The burning of confiscated narcotics, Commissioner Lahai emphasized, serves as a deterrent to those involved in drug importation.

Dr. Ahmed Sannoh, Deputy National Security Coordinator, highlighted the collaborative efforts within the security sector, which have proven instrumental in the fight against narcotic drugs. He provided details of the confiscated narcotics, which included various types of drugs such as tramadol, cannabis sativa, methanol, and cocaine, among others. Dr. Sannoh underscored the significance of government’s commitment to eradicating narcotic drugs in Sierra Leone.

Captain Alpha Jayah Bangura, Harbour Master at the Quay, shared insights into the measures implemented at the port to curb drug trafficking. He emphasized the establishment of international networks with other port authorities to enhance intelligence sharing. Captain Bangura reaffirmed the Port’s commitment to combating drug abuse, considering its significant role as one of the leading revenue-generating institutions for the Government of Sierra Leone.
