The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has given reasons to the public why they fired teargas at Dr. Samura Kamara’s convoy at Mile 38 on their way to Freetown.

The police made this statement in a press release issued on Sunday 2nd April 2023 after the police were accused of attempting the assassination of the APC presidential candidate Dr. Samura Kamara.

In the press release, it was stated that Dr. Samura Kamara left Lungi with a ten-vehicle convoy and the SLP provided security coverage.

It was alleged that the number of vehicles in Dr. Samura Kanara’s convoy kept increasing along the way stating that there were over 50 vehicles in the convoy by the time they reached Mile 38 Checkpoint and the Police had to halt their movements, with the view to engage the team in respect of the gentleman’s agreement.

The press release continued that while the police insisted that the gentleman’s agreement must be adhered to, Dr. Samura Kamara and team, on the other hand, defiantly told the Police that they must allow all the vehicles on the convoy to pass through the Checkpoint to Freetown.

It was also alleged that while the police were insisting for the gentleman’s agreement be followed, some overzealous supporters in the convoy removed shirts and physically confronted the Police which led the police to fire teargas to disperse the crowd to restore law and order and reopen the route to normal traffic.

In the press release, the public was informed that calm has been restored and normal traffic restored on the route.

The release further assured of being fair to all citizens and political parties at all times and informed the public that the incumbent government has always obtained due clearances for all their political meetings and welcoming ceremonies in the past and they intend to keep it that way as it is the only way the SLP will be able to preposition resources and provide adequate security as and when required.

The release ends by calling on all citizens to be law-abiding to ensure the safety and security of the state and all.
