The remains of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Augustine Magnus Kailie who passed away weeks ago was today Friday 16th February 2024 laid at the Sierra Leone Police Headquarters on George Street in the Central Business District of Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown.

The laying out ceremony gathered hundreds of mourners from all walks of life to pay final respects to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Augustine Magnus Kailie.

Led in Christian prayers by the revered and charismatic Head of Chaplain of the Sierra Leone Police, Superintendent Daniel A Sesay, mourners, family members, friends, as well as former colleagues gave glowing tributes to the life and works of the departed Deputy Inspector-General of Police.

Alumni of Fourah Bay College and Njala University, the late Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Augustine Magnus Kailie was enlisted in the Sierra Leone Police in 1989 and he steadily rose through the respective ranks to become the 2nd gentleman of the Sierra Leone Police in August 2022.

At the national level, the late Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Augustine Magnus Kailie, worked in several Regions, Divisions, and Stations in different capacities to the admiration of all and sundry.

His unrelenting desire to serve humanity led him to work with the United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) as an Individual Police Officer (IPO) and later as Police Commissioner (PC) of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) for three years where he excelled beyond expectations.

In a solemn tribute to the man who graciously and sincerely deputized him, the astute Inspector-General of Police, William Fayia Sellu remarked that this is not just a loss to his family, but to the Sierra Leone Police and the country as a whole considering his exceptional exploits and experience with the United Nations and the African Union which we direly needed.

IGP Sellu further praised the exemplary leadership demonstrated by the late Deputy Inspector-General of Police when he was the Regional Police Commander of the Freetown-West Region during the hotly contested national elections of 2018.

The Inspector-General of Police advised Police Officers to emulate the lifestyle and work ethics of the late Augustine Magnus Kailie particularly when it comes to family matters. Thus, he remarked that “Augustine Magnus Kailie was a family man. He dearly loved his family members. In moments like this, only your family members will be there for you. Cherish them. May the soul of our brother and colleague, Augustine Magnus Kailie, Rest in Peace, concluded IGP William Fayia Sellu.

Praise and worship songs, blowing of the beagle, and several sharp salutes climaxed the laying out ceremony at the Police Headquarters as the casket carrying the corpse of the late DIG Kailie was moved away from the Police Headquarters building to his ancestral home in Bo, Southern Sierra Leone where he will be finally laid to rest.
