The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has confirmed the death of a motorcycle rider in Kailahun Town and the subsequent arrest of 25 suspects in connection with alleged homicide, public disorder, and arson following violent disturbances in the township.

According to a police press release, the incident occurred on Sunday, June 21, 2026, and resulted in the death of Abdulai Kallon, a commercial bike rider from Daru.

The police stated that officers initially responded to a distress call reporting that unknown persons had entered a residence in Kailahun Town. Upon arrival, officers reportedly discovered that the individual involved had already left the compound.

A short time later, police officers encountered a large crowd that had apprehended an alleged suspect and subjected him to severe mob violence. The victim, identified as Abdulai Kallon, was taken into police custody and was being transported to the police station when he reportedly died.

The police further disclosed that misinformation quickly spread among commercial bike riders, alleging that Kallon had been killed by police officers. The claims reportedly triggered unrest in the township.

According to the SLP, groups of commercial motorbike riders and other youths subsequently engaged in acts of violence, setting fire to several police properties, including the police barracks on Pendembu Road, a four-apartment residential building, a police post, and other police facilities.

The police said 25 individuals have been arrested and detained in connection with the alleged homicide, public disorder, and arson attacks. Investigations into the incidents are continuing.

The SLP noted that calm has since been restored in Kailahun and that normal activities have resumed within the township.

The police assured the public of their commitment to conducting a free, fair, transparent, and impartial investigation into all aspects of the incident.

The force also appealed to members of the public to cooperate with investigators by providing any information that may assist in identifying other individuals involved in the disturbances.

The Sierra Leone Police reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining law and order across the country.
