The Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) has granted a six-month caretaker extension to the National Officers, National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Advisory Committee (NAC) of the All People’s Congress (APC), effectively aligning with arguments advanced by senior party stakeholder Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden.
In a directive titled “The Directives of the Commission,” the PPRC stated that the current NEC, NAC, other current officers of the APC and all other current elected bodies, “having triggered Section 39(5) of the Political Parties Act, 2022, shall continue to provide leadership for a period not exceeding six (6) months, from the date of the expiration of their three years’ term.”
The Commission further directed that should the six-month extension elapse before the party holds its National Delegates’ Conference (NDC), the Interim Elections Management Committee (IEMC) shall continue with the conduct of elections.
It added that the Leader of the APC in Parliament shall constitute five other Members of Parliament, representing each of the five regions of the country, who will be responsible for the administration of the party up to the NDC.
The directive follows an 11-page Amicus Curiae brief deposited at the PPRC on Friday, January 30, 2026, by Dr. Blyden, who said she was intervening in her capacity as an Honorary Foundation Member of the APC and as a former litigant in the 2021 case of Alfred Peter Conteh versus the APC.
In her submission, Dr. Blyden urged the Commission to approve a six-month caretaker extension for the party’s National Officers, NEC and NAC. She warned that their immediate removal upon the expiration of their three-year tenure in February 2026 would create institutional instability within the party.
Her brief sought to oppose complaints filed by Hon. Ambassador Alimamy A. Kamara and Sahr Philip Mani, who had asked the PPRC to remove the current APC executives once their tenure expires.
Dr. Blyden argued that the complaints misinterpret both the APC Constitution of 2022 and the Political Parties Act, 2022, particularly Section 39(5), which she said expressly allows the PPRC to approve a one-time extension of party executives for up to six months.
With the Commission now invoking Section 39(5) in its directive, the PPRC’s decision effectively upholds the legal position advanced in Dr. Blyden’s brief, allowing the current APC leadership to remain in office for a transitional period not exceeding six months beyond February 2026.
