President Dr. Julius Maada Bio on Thursday officially commissioned a cold chain facility for the Bonthe District Health Management Team and launched the National Emergency Medical Services (NEMS) program, marking a significant step in Sierra Leone’s healthcare advancement.
The initiatives, part of the government’s Quality Essential Health Service and System Support project, aim to enhance immunization efforts and emergency medical response capabilities nationwide.
Speaking at the event, President Bio emphasized the pivotal role of the cold chain facility in bolstering healthcare delivery in Bonthe, noting its potential as a model for other districts. “This facility ensures vaccines are stored at optimal temperatures, strengthening our immunization efforts,” he said. He credited Sierra Leone’s globally recognized 95% immunization coverage to such infrastructure investments and the dedication of healthcare workers.
The President also underscored the importance of equitable healthcare access, reiterating his administration’s commitment to providing quality services regardless of region, ethnicity, or gender.
Dr. Songor Koedoyoma, Acting Chief Executive Officer of NEMS, announced the deployment of 14 new ambulances across five districts. Fully equipped and staffed, the ambulances aim to reduce emergency response times and facilitate timely medical referrals.
Dr. Desmond Maada Kangbai, EPI Program Manager, highlighted the cold chain facility’s critical role in expanding vaccine storage capacity and preventing supply disruptions.
Minister of Health Dr. Austin Demby commended the President’s leadership, pointing to improved national health indicators, including a 30% reduction in infant mortality and a decline in maternal deaths. “These initiatives bring us closer to our goal of zero preventable maternal and child deaths,” he said.
Following the healthcare launch, President Bio toured ongoing projects in the district, including the Government Training Institute, a bridge, and boarding facilities for nurses in Mattru, to assess progress.
The initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and achieving equitable access to quality services nationwide.
