Sierra Leone’s President Dr. Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has expressed his deepest condolences to the Catholic community following the sudden death of Pope Francis, the Bishop of Rome.
The Pontiff, who ascended to the papacy in 2013 as the 266th successor of St. Peter, passed away this morning at the age of 88.
Cardinal Kevin announced the news, revealing that Pope Francis had been battling pneumonia and bronchitis, which ultimately led to his passing.
President Bio, deeply saddened by the news, stated, “I am heartbroken to learn of the passing of Pope Francis. My heartfelt condolences go out to our Catholic community during this difficult time. May his soul find eternal peace.”
In his message, President Bio offered words of comfort to those who had the privilege of knowing the religious leader, wishing him “eternal peace” and urging them to “find comfort in our cherished memories of his leadership and compassion.”
The loss has resonated throughout Sierra Leone, with prominent figures joining the global outpouring of grief. Myk Berewa, Director of Communications of the Office of the President of Sierra Leone, and renowned journalist Umaru Fofanah have also extended their tributes to the Catholic community, acknowledging the profound impact of Pope Francis’s life and ministry.
