The commander of the Presidential Guard at Lungi International Airport, Warrant Officer Class I Moses Brima Kabba, was fatally shot on Wednesday morning in a dispute over a $100 tip, security sources and eyewitnesses have confirmed.

The incident, which occurred within the Presidential Guard precinct at approximately 10:00 hours, involved Corporal Steven, a subordinate officer who allegedly opened fire on WOI Kabba following an argument over the distribution of token money. The tip was reportedly given by the Vice President before his departure.

According to witnesses, the confrontation escalated when Corporal Steven accused his superior of withholding funds that were meant to be shared among unit members. It is customary for the President and Vice President to provide monetary tokens to guards during official travel, but the distribution has frequently caused tension within the ranks.

Following the shooting, Corporal Steven fled the scene with his service rifle, heading toward Freetown. A joint manhunt by the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) led to his arrest hours later. He remains in military custody as investigations continue.

The RSLAF earlier issued a statement declaring Corporal Steven wanted, describing the incident as stemming from “indiscipline.” The body of WOI Kabba has been moved to the Lungi Government Hospital mortuary.

The shooting has sparked public outcry, with many expressing shock online. Social media user Vickie Remoe posted, “Really shocked to hear that a soldier killed a colleague over a $100 tip… May Allah push da kain desperation for money far.” Another user, Sarah Kally, lamented, “A life lost for SLL100/$100 allegedly. Only in #magicsalone.”

Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the motive or detailed circumstances of the shooting.
