A fire that broke out on the evening of June 9, 2025, has destroyed the main administrative building of Southern Model Academy Secondary School in Bo City.

The building also contained classrooms used daily by students and teachers.

According to Principal Edmond Bockarie, the school has over 800 pupils, all of whom have now been affected. The fire burned through important school documents, learning materials, furniture, and equipment. The damage has left the school unable to operate, and classes have come to a stop.

Eyewitnesses say the fire started around 5:00 PM local time prompting community members and local authorities to stop the flames, but it moved too fast. The full cause is not yet known and is still being looked into.

The school is now asking for help from the government, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and members of the public. The total loss is estimated in the millions of old Leones, and the school is struggling to recover. With the administrative building gone and classrooms damaged, both teaching and school operations have been affected.

Southern Model Academy is hoping for support to get pupils back to school as soon as possible.
