The latest edition of the Media Freedom Review by the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of journalists in Sierra Leone, warning that intimidation and harassment incidents are on the rise.

The September 2025 report details multiple alarming cases of threats and assaults targeting journalists across the country. Among those mentioned is Christian Conteh, Managing Editor of Sierra Check and Editor at Truth Media, who reportedly faced intimidation by police officers while covering a story about a corpse at Lumley Beach in Freetown.

Conteh’s account describes how five officers, including one in plain clothes, allegedly approached him, grabbed his hands, and seized his phone as he attempted to document the scene. His phone was later returned after some photos had been deleted.

The MRCG report also highlights several other troubling incidents, including the alleged assault of journalists, threats linked to political and professional activities, and restrictions placed on reporters’ access to public spaces. Cases involve journalists from G8 Media Group, as well as issues surrounding the withdrawal of frequencies, cybercrime offenses, and physical assaults.

The organization notes that these developments point to a shrinking space for media freedom and an urgent need for stronger institutional protection for journalists.

Media stakeholders, including the Guild of Newspaper Editors led by Thomas Dixon, continue to call for accountability and respect for the rights of media professionals as enshrined in Sierra Leone’s laws and democratic principles.

As public concern grows, the MRCG urges all parties from law enforcement agencies to political institutions  to reaffirm their commitment to protecting freedom of expression and the press.
