In a bold move to boost Sierra Leone’s food production and promote self-reliance among military personnel, Lt. Colonel MSK Fayiah, commanding officer of the 14th Infantry Battalion in Pujehun District, has led the mass planting of over 10 hectares of cassava.

Lt. Colonel Fayiah, an agriculturist by training, has rallied his officers and men to participate in this large-scale cassava farming initiative.

In an interview, Lt. Col. Fayiah explained the reasons behind this initiative, stating, “As an agriculturist, I understand the nutritional value of cassava and the fertility of the soil. I immediately got my personnel involved to embark on this large-scale cassava farm, which will not only provide a valuable food source but also generate additional income for our soldiers.”

The commanding officer shared his vision of making the soldiers self-reliant and capable of earning extra income through their agricultural activities. “Agriculture pays, and if my personnel engage in large-scale farming or backyard gardening, the sky will be the limit, especially when they achieve bumper harvests,” Lt. Col. Fayiah said.

This move is in line with the directive of Sierra Leone’s President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, to increase the country’s food production and reduce reliance on imports. The “Salone Feed Salone” drive, initiated by the government, aims to achieve national food security and improve the livelihoods of Sierra Leoneans.

Lt. Col. Fayiah has pledged that in the next planting season, the battalion will aim for over 40 hectares of mixed cropping, which will provide for the entire officers, men, and their relatives. “My vision is to ensure that my personnel live a dignified life and have a sustainable way of earning a living,” he stated.

This initiative by the military commander is an exemplary demonstration of the armed forces’ commitment to supporting the nation’s agricultural development and food security goals. By utilizing their land resources and expertise, the 14th Infantry Battalion is setting a precedent for other military units to follow, contributing to Sierra Leone’s self-reliance and economic prosperity.
