The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and the National Water Resources Management Agency (NWRMA) have completed a successful joint inspection and certification of equipment for a new water monitoring station in the Moa River Basin.
The collaborative effort, finalized in September 2025, follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions. The agreement seeks to enhance the management and protection of Sierra Leone’s water resources, with a specific focus on improving the monitoring of the Moa River Basin, a critical water source for the country.
Under the terms of the MoU, the RSLAF allocated a parcel of land within the 1 Infantry Battalion area for the construction of a state-of-the-art monitoring station. The facility is designed to track the hydrological behavior and general characteristics of the Moa River Basin, helping to ensure sustainable management of water resources in the region.

Given the strategic importance of the project and the sensitive location of the facility, both the NWRMA and RSLAF agreed that a rigorous inspection of all equipment slated for installation was essential. This thorough evaluation, conducted by technical teams from both sides, was aimed at confirming that each component met the necessary operational and safety standards.
The inspection process culminated in the formal certification of the equipment by the RSLAF, paving the way for the full installation of the monitoring station. Mr. Abu Bakarr Iscandri Conteh, Director of Compliance & Media at NWRMA, emphasized the importance of the collaboration, stating, “This joint inspection and certification underscore our commitment to transparency, security, and inter-agency cooperation.
The Moa River monitoring station is an important national asset, and working with the RSLAF ensures that its installation meets the highest standards. This partnership is a clear demonstration of our collective resolve to protect Sierra Leone’s water resources for present and future generations.”

The new monitoring station is expected to play a pivotal role in improving water governance and enhancing the country’s ability to collect vital data. The facility will also strengthen early-warning systems for potential water-related risks in the region, helping authorities respond proactively to challenges such as flooding or drought.
The successful certification of the equipment signals a major step forward in the effort to safeguard Sierra Leone’s water resources. By working together, the NWRMA and RSLAF issued a strong message about the importance of collaborative efforts to protect the nation’s natural resources.
