Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister Jacob Jusu Saffa has highlighted some of the advantages Sierra Leone will gain as a non-permanent member of the United Nations (UN) Security Council which the country attained on Tuesday 6th June 2023.

Saffa highlighted five bullet points starting with influence.

He stated that Sierra Leone as non-permanent member state of the UN Security Council will have increased influence as it now has the opportunity to shape the global agenda and contribute to decisions on matters of international peace and security, adding that it can also use its position to promote its interest and those of its region.

He also stated that Sierra Leone will enhance credibility as being a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council is a symbol of a country’s status and importance in the International world as it enhances credibility and reputation and signals its commitment to upholding international law and norms.

He went further and stated that Sierra Leone will benefit to access information as it will have confidential information and briefings on matters of international peace and security.
He said such an advantage will help Sierra Leone to make more informed decisions and better understanding and dynamics of conflicts and crises around the world.

He continued that networking is another advantage Sierra Leone will have to benefit from as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council as members are provided with opportunities to build relationships with other countries and key International actors that can help advance its interests and influence other areas of global governance.

He concluded by stating that Sierra Leone will benefit from leadership opportunities as member states of the council have the opportunity to take on leadership roles and responsibilities in addressing global challenges, as this can help build its reputation as a responsible global actor and increase its influence in the international community.
